Attorney Margaret Ahne Herlitzka Named to Wisconsin Law Journal’s “Power 30 List” for Outstanding Contributions in Family Law

Hale, Skemp, Hanson, Skemp, & Sleik proudly announces the well-deserved recognition of their Partner, Margaret “Peggy” Herlitzka, who has been named to the coveted Wisconsin Law Journal’s “Power 30 List” of Family Law and Estate Planning Attorneys for her work in Family Law.

According to the Wisconsin Law Journal, the “Power List” is a new feature in its publication “that examines the power brokers who lead and influence various parts of the Wisconsin legal community.”  With respect to the family law and estate planning attorneys named to the “Power 30 List”, the WLJ sought to “highlight those whose mere presence on a case signifies the stakes, who have influenced the direction of the law, whose leadership in the community is pervasive and whose respect within the bar is undeniable.”

Margaret “Peggy” Herlitzka recalls being in a store when an adult child of a past client approached her, expressing gratitude for the help she provided years before and that their parent and siblings were now thriving. “This encounter happened while I was in the middle of another emotionally taxing case involving domestic violence, and served to remind me of the positive impact my work can have—on not just my client, but also their children,” said Herlitzka, a partner at Hale, Skemp, Hanson, Skemp & Sleik in La Crosse. For more than 30 years, she has worked in family law, litigating hundreds of complicated issues including custody, placement, child support, maintenance/spousal support, and division issues. In addition to her private practice, she serves as a Supplemental Court Commissioner for La Crosse County. “I take pride in establishing a personal connection with my clients, serving not only as their legal advocate but also as a compassionate guide through what is likely the most challenging period of their lives,” Herlitzka said. She works with her clients to obtain viable custody and placement schedules for their children and feel secure about their finances.  Wisconsin Law Journal’s Power List of Top Family Law & Estate Planning Attorneys (March 2024)

Herlitzka was honored for myriad reasons, including Herlitzka’s work to bring hundreds of complicated family law cases to a conclusion in ways that elevate the quality of her clients’ lives. “I share this honor with the team of hard-working attorneys, paralegals and staff I work with every day who are also dedicated to providing the highest level of legal service to our clients.”  In addition to the honor of being named to this prestigious “Power List”, Herlitzka has also been named fourteen times as a Family Law Super Lawyer ® by Milwaukee Magazine and has been selected by her peers as a Best Lawyer in Family Law each year since 2013.

Her tireless dedication extends beyond the courtroom to professional associations throughout the state and community groups, being chosen to receive the State of Wisconsin’s Business and Professional Women’s “Woman of Inspiration” award at its state convention. She was also recognized locally by the YWCA of the Coulee Region as an “Outstanding Woman” in the area of Business/Professional and was honored with the title of “Mrs. Oktoberfest” in 2015.

Presently serving as the Past-President for the Wisconsin Law Foundation Board of Directors and a member of the Aptiv (formerly Riverfront) Foundation Board of Directors, Herlitzka exemplifies unwavering dedication to both her profession and community.
